What it is
CCEF's stated aim is 'restoring Christ to counseling and counseling to the church,' and it has been the intellectual centre of the biblical counseling movement for decades. It operates on four fronts: a counseling practice whose counselors work with anxiety, depression, grief, addictions, relationships, abuse and trauma; a school offering courses and certification in biblical counseling; an annual national conference; and a large publishing catalogue that includes books, the well-known minibook series, children's books, curriculum and the Journal of Biblical Counseling. For someone in this directory, the minibooks are the most immediately usable piece — short, cheap, topic-specific booklets you can read in a sitting or hand to someone. The blog, podcast and video content are free. Note the theological position: CCEF works from Scripture as the primary framework for counseling, which is a different model from the integrationist or clinical approach of, say, a CSAT therapist. Worth knowing which you're choosing.
