What it is

Gene McConnell maps a five-stage progression and writes it partly from his own experience, which is what stops it functioning as a scare piece. Early exposure, typically in adolescence. Addiction, as use becomes compulsive and concealment begins. Escalation, as tolerance builds and more graphic material is required for the same effect. Desensitization, where emotional numbness toward a spouse and toward relationships sets in. And acting out, where fantasy moves into behaviour — strip clubs, prostitution. His explanation is neurochemical: the brain becomes tolerant to the chemicals pornography harnesses and requires novelty to produce the same relief. He is clear that healing requires transparency, professional counseling, support groups and church community rather than isolation. Around 2,000 words, free. Its practical use is orientation — a person can see where they are and, more usefully, where this goes if nothing changes.
