What it is
Shame, secrecy and the moment of discovery make a combination that clinicians in this field treat seriously, and somebody will read a site like this on the worst night of their life. 988 is the national crisis line: call or text 988, or chat at chat.988lifeline.org, any hour of any day, free and confidential, with trained counselors on the other end. It is for suicidal thoughts, but also for anxiety, depression, substance struggles and the general state of not being able to see a way forward, and there are dedicated routes for veterans, for deaf and hard-of-hearing callers, and for young people. Nothing about using it requires a person to have a diagnosis or an emergency worth justifying. The right way to carry this is not as a directory entry someone has to search for — it belongs in the site footer, the way it appears on every credible mental-health site.
