What it is

Every Man's Battle has probably done more to get Christian men talking about sexual temptation than any other single book, and its tactical vocabulary — bouncing the eyes, building a defence in three perimeters — is still in common use in men's groups. Arterburn and Stoeker write bluntly and practically, and the book spawned an entire series covering teenagers, marriages, and later editions for women. It is worth pairing the recommendation with the criticism it has attracted: the approach leans heavily on behavioural containment and impulse management, some readers find its treatment of women's role in a husband's temptation dated or troubling, and it predates most of the current understanding of trauma and compulsion. For many men it remains the book that got them started; for the underlying causes, follow it with something like Unwanted or Surfing for God.
