What it is

Cecil Murphey writes as a survivor rather than as a clinician, and the structure is deliberate: forty short pieces, each one a truth a man in this situation needs, none of them long enough to be unbearable on a bad day. The title carries the argument. Most Christian material on abuse promises resolution, and men who do not experience resolution conclude they have failed at healing as well as everything else. Murphey and Gary Roe say instead that this is a long recovery with real progress and no clean end, which is both truer and easier to live with. Written from a Christian frame without turning the abuse into a lesson. Read it alongside 1in6 for the support side; Murphey's companion book, When a Man You Love Was Abused, is written to the wife.
