What it is

Edward T. Welch, a counselor and faculty member at CCEF, wrote what is probably the most useful Christian book on shame. His distinction is the one that unlocks a great deal of sexual recovery: guilt is about what you did and can be confessed, while shame is about what you believe you are, and shame is what drives concealment, isolation and the relapse cycle that follows. Welch traces shame through Scripture — the unclean, the outcast, the rejected — and works through how the gospel addresses not only forgiveness but cleansing and belonging. It is not a book about pornography, and that is why it works: someone who has read five recovery books and still cannot stop hiding usually has a shame problem rather than an information problem. Published by New Growth Press. Pair it with Jay Stringer's Unwanted.
